Named after the Aztec feathered serpent god Quetzalcoatl, Quetzalcoatlus was a pterodactyloid pterosaur known from the Late Cretaceous period, the largest known flying animalsof all time. Covered in a light fur, this reptile was built like a bird, equipped with hollow bones and sturdy wings for flight with the ability to skim waters for food. Despite its size, Quetzalcoatlus probably only weighed a few hundred pounds.Skeletal remains have been recovered, it had an estimated wingspan of up to 12 m (39 ft).
